Welcome to Wednesday

Welcome to your Midweek Moments. Well, it’s November again, and that means in the fabulous world of Blueberries, it’s really Sew-vember. With an extra special emphasis on all things sewing and quilting, here are some of the events and opportunities planned for the entire 30 days.

November being the 11th month, it’s all about that magical number 11. We’ll be featuring 11 product items each week, each with 11% off the usual price. We also have a Facebook competition going, with a $111 Blueberries gift voucher up for grabs.

Jackie and the crew in the US send their love too, by the way. It’s been a whole week already since the excited group took off for the quilting-themed holiday of a lifetime, involving New York, Houston and Lancaster County. Jackie reports that they’ve hit some unseasonal rain and snow, but apart from that, everyone’s been having a great time. Expect to hear the stories when they return.

Big 'n' Bizarre

A road trip of Australia’s fibreglass monuments

The Big Camera

Technically the Big Camera isn’t really a Big Thing in the traditional sense as it’s not a cheesy roadside monument, but a building. A museum, actually, totally dedicated to photography. But it looks so cool and scores so many points for sheer innovation and originally, that it deserves an honorary pit stop on our national tour of kitch on a grand scale.

The Big Camera Photographic Museum lives in the tiny town of Meckering, about 135kms east of Perth. This town is so small it’s barely even on the map, but ironically, its one claim to fame is the great Meckering earthquake of 1968, which very nearly wiped it off the map. Measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale, the earthquake flattened about 90% of the town, but miraculously managed to do this without killing a single person.

It was to Meckering that camera-aficionado, Chip Waddley, came after a couple of particularly hard blows that left him homeless, penniless and with nothing but his collection of antique cameras. In a bid to merely put a roof over his head, he converted what was little more than a large tin shed at a disused service station into an inhabitable building. However, realising that his cameras actually required more room than he did, he decided to make the building a museum of photography, with modest living quarters at the back.

The ‘Big Camera’ was opened in 1995 after a year of construction. Designing the building in the shape of a 35mm camera was Chip’s way of putting his venture firmly on the map, as it were. At 100ft long, 70ft wide and 15ft high, the Big Camera is the only museum of its kind in Western Australia, and certainly one of the world’s largest cameras. It’s therefore fitting that it should house one of the world’s largest private collection of cameras – over 1,200 of them, from daguerreotype to digital – and all fully operational.

Any mention of Meckering now usually includes a reference to the Big Camera as well as the 1968 earthquake. And the townsfolk don’t mind a bit that photography fans, both professional and amateur, now flock from all over the country to check out the museum’s displays. Right from the beginning, you could say that the local population and the Big Camera have just… er… clicked.

Now, say cheese!
